Celebrating almost a year in business!
As I approach the one-year mark of my business, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable growth I have experienced over the past nine months. Transforming my passion for photography into a business has been an incredible journey, and to watch my progression blossom. My love for photography began in my childhood, and it deepened further when I had my first baby in 2012. It was 10 years ago this summer during one of my child’s naps, I took the opportunity to write a business plan and brainstorm potential names for my business. Interestingly, I didn’t end up using the business name I had chosen back in 2013 when I finally launched my business in 2022. Initially, I practiced photography with my kids, family, and friends, treating it as a hobby while working on my skills and building a portfolio. However, as the demands of being a stay-at-home mom and raising young children took precedence, my passion for photography gradually took a back seat. Looking back, I sometimes wish I had continued pursuing my love for photography, but I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason.
My five children are the reason I finally took the leap to pursue my dream of having my own photography business. I wanted them to see it’s possible to make your dreams come true, even if it took over a decade to make it happen. I love looking back at pictures of my children and reliving the moments. To me photography is more than just snapping a picture. It’s capturing a moment in time to freeze and cherish forever as a memory. After a photo session you’re left with these images of you and your loved ones. These pieces of art to be displayed in your home to reminisce on the past and in those images it’s like time stood still. A lifetime can seem like forever but the years slip away so quickly.
I simply love capturing any moment in time but I always knew I wanted to specialize in newborn photography. Working with children has always been a part of my life. From babysitting, daycare teacher, nannying and having my own family. Having the chance to work with parents as they start their journey with a new baby, it’s something I cherish so dearly. My work in photography also includes maternity, families, couples, branding and boudoir. While I’m finding my path in the business I wanted to test out multiple areas before niching down. Each type of photography is fascinating and having the opportunity to work with newborns one day and something extreme like boudoir another day is my favorite part of the job.
And as they say, “Third time’s a charm.” This statement held true for my business when I started my third attempt in 2022 to establish my own venture. Launching a business was not my only goal; I also aimed to grow my skills by investing in training. It was lucky enough that a friend told me about her family photographer who offered mentorship programs. Without hesitation, I sent her an email, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made during this journey. Under the guidance of a seasoned photographer, I invested in myself and took the opportunity to grow and develop. Everyday I say to myself “What can I do today that will better me for tomorrow.” So whether I’m working under a mentorship, reading books about photography or taking online courses; my main goal is growth.
So as we near this significant milestone of one year in business, I take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the progress I have made. It has been a journey filled with both wins and challenges. I celebrate each accomplishment, no matter how big or small, and I continue to set new goals for the future. Growth is an ongoing process, and as long as I nurture my passion and remain dedicated, there will always be room for further success and personal development.
My life experiences, including motherhood, have infused into my work as a photographer and business owner. I remain open to learning opportunities, eager to embrace new challenges, and committed to expanding my network and drawing inspiration from the photography community. The fellow photographers I’ve connected with and small business owners in general have brought so many amazing opportunities and taught me things I never would’ve.
If this journey has taught me one thing is that with hard work and perseverance anything is possible! For the next year I strive to continue to build my brand and really focus on learning the ins and outs of running a business.
As I look ahead, I am grateful for the journey thus far and excited for what lies ahead. I am confident that with passion, dedication, and a willingness to invest in my skills, my photography business will continue to thrive and bring joy to others.
