Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do at your Chamber of Commerce?
I’ve been in the chamber industry for 20 years. As President of the Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce, I’m dedicated to supporting and advocating for our local businesses. I love connecting members to valuable resources, organizing impactful events, and working to enhance the economic and community growth in the Peabody area. I am also the only facilitator in Mass for Destination Creation, a course that teaches businesses (and communities) how to set themselves apart from the competition and attract more customers.
What made you want to work for the Chamber of Commerce?
I had left my corporate job with Sheraton Hotels & Resorts to stay home with my small children, when I saw an ad in the paper for a PT position at the Chamber. I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet a lot of businesses so that when I wanted to go back to work full time I would have a lot of contacts! My only knowledge of chambers of commerce was in tourist destinations, so I had no idea what I was getting into in a business centric community. I quickly found out that I really enjoy community work and collaboration.
What do you love the most about the area where you live in Massachusetts?
Having traveled the world, I honestly can say we are very fortunate here in New England. I love the changing seasons, the beautiful beaches and everything Boston has to offer. The north shore has so many quaint towns, diverse cities and great outdoor activities that it is impossible to be bored.
Why do you think it’s important for everyone to be a member of a Chamber of Commerce?
A chamber of commerce is its own unique ecosystem. Many people assume it’s a city department or state agency, but as an independent association, we’re ideally positioned to understand and support all the elements that contribute to a thriving community. Being a Chamber member is valuable because it connects businesses with vital resources, ensure someone is advocating for local economy, and makes it easier for businesses to tap into community-driven initiatives. If you want to build your brand or image, being an engaged chamber member is probably the quickest way to make that happen.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
Most people automatically assume that if you own your own business, you must be successful, which often isn’t the case. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy, and I always tell them that it takes most people 3 attempts before they hit on a successful business model. The biggest lesson I learned is that I alone cannot make every business successful, you can only provide access to information, resources and opportunities and hope they take advantage of them or ask for help when they need it.
If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?
I would like to get back into the travel industry and take people on group tours to exotic places. I love discovering (and sharing) ‘off the beaten path’ places that are unique or have a backstory.
When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?
I like to express my creative side when I am not working. I’m always looking for new crafts to make or furniture to makeover. I also really enjoy entertaining family and friends. I’m always dreaming up a reason to host a dinner party or event so I can cook and decorate! It’s my way of making others feel special.
