Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do?
Hello! My name is Jen Hillery. I am a lawyer by background, and co-founder of Redwood Speaking, LLC. Redwood Speaking is a public speaking firm specializing in consulting services, including individualized coaching, group workshops, and corporate training.
I am also a volunteer in my community serving on Town Meeting, and for my alma mater Skidmore College on the Alumni Board.
What made you want to start your own business?
Having worked in the public speaking space for many years, my business partner and I saw first hand the power of teaching others how to find and use their voice. It is deeply rewarding to support others in sharing their stories; in sharing their knowledge and experience; and in participating more fully in their professional and personal lives.
What do you love the most about owning a business in Massachusetts?
We recently became certified with the Massachusetts’ Supplier Diversity Office as a Women Owned Business. I admire our state’s commitment to Women-owned and Minority-owned businesses, and look forward to the networking that will come from this certification.
What are your favorite small businesses to support in Massachusetts?
I love supporting local and small restaurants. I grew up in a family in the restaurant business in Vermont, so I have a deep understanding and appreciation for how hard it is to manage and own a successful restaurant business.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
The biggest lesson I have learned is the importance of building relationships both with your colleagues and your clients or the people you serve. Relationships are built on trust, respect, and empathy; and these are qualities I try to bring to the table.
If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?
I have always loved the television programs CBS Sunday morning and Chronicle because of the heartfelt, human interest stories they share, so one dream would be working on these programs.
When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?
I love spending time with my family outside – whether it be biking, hiking, skiing or exploring historic sites. I also love storytelling – you can find me telling “moth” style stories around the Boston area when I can!
Thank you for sharing more about yourself! Tell us how we can get in touch with you or find you online.
