Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do at your Chamber of Commerce?

My name is Clifford Athouriste, and I am the Director of Membership and Retention at the One SouthCoast Chamber of Commerce. In my role, I focus on attracting new members and retaining existing ones. I organize networking events, coordinate ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and run our bi-yearly job fairs. Additionally, I lead our ambassador team, which is dedicated to engaging with the local business community.

After leaving the retail field, I sought a career that allowed me to be an integral part of the community. At the Chamber, I’ve had the opportunity to expand our job fair offerings by including Spanish interpreters to better serve our diverse population of attendees. This initiative helps ensure that we are accessible and inclusive to all.

I strongly believe that the Chamber is a vital resource for businesses, providing a platform for connection, resource sharing, and knowledge exchange. My main goal this year is to continue supporting my team in engaging with our members, encouraging greater participation in community events.

What I enjoy most about my role is getting to know new members and understanding their needs. This aligns perfectly with my personal goal of helping people access the resources they need to support their businesses effectively.

What made you want to work for the Chamber of Commerce?

After leaving the retail field, I was looking for a job that would allow me to be an active part of the community. The Chamber of Commerce offered the perfect opportunity for me to engage with local businesses and contribute to their growth. In my role as the Director of Membership and Retention, I can help businesses connect with each other and share resources and knowledge. I enjoy getting to know new members and supporting them in finding the resources they need to thrive. This aligns with my personal goal of fostering a vibrant and collaborative business community.

What do you love the most about the area where you live in Massachusetts?

What I love most about the area where I live in Massachusetts is the vibrant and diverse culinary scene. The region boasts an incredible array of restaurants that showcase the rich flavors of local cuisine. Our annual Chowderfest is a testament to this, bringing together the best chefs and eateries to celebrate and compete in a friendly, flavorful competition. This event not only highlights the outstanding talent we have but also brings the community together in appreciation of great food. Whether it’s seafood, international fare, or classic American dishes, the dining options here are truly a food lover’s dream.

Why do you think it’s important for everyone to be a member of a Chamber of Commerce?

Being a member of a Chamber of Commerce is vital for businesses and individuals because it fosters a strong, interconnected community. My role as the Director of Membership and Retention has shown me how the Chamber enables businesses to connect, share resources, and grow their networks. The Chamber provides businesses with tools and support to thrive through networking events and ambassador programs. The collective knowledge and expertise within the Chamber help businesses navigate challenges and celebrate successes together, making it an indispensable resource for anyone looking to be part of a dynamic, supportive community.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned throughout my career is the immense power of working together. At the Chamber of Commerce, I’ve seen firsthand how collective effort can drive significant impact. When businesses and community members unite, they can overcome challenges, share valuable resources, and achieve goals that would be difficult to reach individually.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?

If I weren’t in my current position, my next dream job would involve a role centered around training and development, such as a corporate trainer or a learning and development specialist. I’m passionate about helping individuals and organizations grow by providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. In such a role, I would enjoy designing and delivering training programs that empower people to achieve their professional goals and enhance their capabilities. Combining my love for community engagement with a focus on education and skill-building would be incredibly rewarding, as it aligns with my commitment to fostering growth and development in both individuals and organizations.

When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?

When I’m not working, I enjoy a variety of activities that keep me engaged and relaxed. I’m a licensed Zumba instructor, so I love leading and participating in Zumba classes, which are a fun and energetic way to stay fit. I also find crocheting to be a relaxing and creative outlet; in fact, most of my team members have already received a crocheted blanket from me. Additionally, I enjoy exploring different cuisines and indulging in good food, whether it’s trying out new recipes or dining at local restaurants. These activities provide a great balance to my work life and keep me motivated and energized.
