Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Alex and I am the owner of City on the Hill Consultancy. I’m from a quaint apple town in central Massachusetts that even the neighboring towns somehow haven’t heard of. I graduated from Bentley University, and since then, I’ve built my own business focused on organic marketing strategies, specializing in SEO and social media. I work closely with small businesses across a range of industries—financial services, medical practices, pet products, and masonry—helping each of them strengthen their online presence and connect with their ideal audience. It’s incredibly rewarding to support their growth through tailored, impactful marketing!
What made you want to start your business?
I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart! Growing up, I was constantly finding new ways to hustle—I had lemonade stands, painted custom greeting cards with watercolors, did henna at proms and kids’ birthday parties, taught tennis lessons, made Christmas ornaments, sold baked goods…you name it! So, starting my own business was a natural fit for me. I combined my creativity, marketing degree, and passion for helping small businesses, and that’s how City on the Hill was born! Today, I get to do what I love every day, helping other businesses grow and thrive and I couldn’t be happier.
What do you love the most about owning a business in Massachusetts?
What I love most about owning a business in Massachusetts is the incredible community and diversity of industries here! Massachusetts is full of small businesses with deep roots and unique stories, from historic architecture to tech companies. It’s inspiring to work with people who are passionate about what they do and are really committed to their craft. Plus, there’s something so special about being able to support local businesses in a place that feels like home. I’ve lived in 3 states now, and nothing says home like MA!
What are your favorite small businesses to support in Massachusetts?
The Gingerbread Construction Co, Carlson’s Orchard, the Bolton Bean, and Nashoba Vision are some of my favorites!
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that nobody really has it all figured out. I used to feel intimidated by people who seemed hyper-successful, but over time, I realized everyone has their own struggles and insecurities. For instance, I’ve met business owners who looked like they were thriving on social media, but in reality, they were dealing with significant challenges behind the scenes. Another example is seeing entrepreneurs with impressive resumes who openly admit they’re still learning and making mistakes along the way. It’s been a powerful reminder to give myself grace and focus on my own journey without comparing it to someone else’s highlight reel.
If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?
My dream job has switched so many times over the years. When I was younger, I wanted to be a NASCAR or F1 driver. Today, I would say a bakery owner or an artist.
When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?
I love to watch reality (trashy) TV, read business and self-help books, go to farmers markets, and drive around.
