Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do?
I’m an award-winning copywriter, messaging consultant, and CEO of That’s A Spade Copywriting Services. I write website copy, blogs, bios, and other deliverables for confident solo professionals. We start with a discovery process to define their unique voice and perspective so we have a foundational language bank for all of their communications to start from. I have found that for anything to hit someone’s target client, their voice has to be crystal clear before they can have effective SEO, headshots, marketing, profiles, etc.
What made you want to start your business?
I’ve been writing personally since middle school, sparked by angsty journaling and poetry. I’m proud to say I’ve never worked in corporate and have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, starting with making my own newspapers and magazines when I was still in the single digits and “cutting and pasting” was literal. I’ve worked in the beauty industry and owned a brick-and-mortar business with ten female employees. I have and still do facilitate creative writing classes. What I have learned is that, at the end of the day, most people want to communicate in a way that resonates and respects their individuality. In business, you have to figure out how to say what you want to say in a way that your target client needs to hear it to pay you for your work. Dynamic copywriting combines both of those things.
What do you love the most about owning a business in Massachusetts?
Not being told what to do:) That said, things need to get done, and I love having the flexibility to decide what, when, where, and how. I can work long or short days or weekend mornings if I choose. And being in Massachusetts is inspirational because of its history of literature, education, and culture. If I need some motivation or need a creativity boost, a day in Boston does the trick for me.
What are your favorite small businesses to support in Massachusetts?
As I said earlier, stuff needs to get done when you’re a business owner, and I’ve gained more control over my business by working with Kathleen Lawson of Kathleen Lawson Consulting. I’m a big fan of local coffee shops, like The Big Bear in Dedham, and the Side Door in Norwood.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
The biggest lesson for me has been be yourself, know and hold your boundaries, and put yourself in other people’s shoes to understand their feelings, actions, and behaviors.
If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?
As a chef, in my own restaurant, of course.
When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?
I love to be with people who make me laugh. I also love travel, cooking and eating good food, reading and writing, and hanging out in the city.
