Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Nina Lee Carmo and I am the Owner and Leader Tutor at 2Plus2 Tutoring, a traveling tutor small business. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Political Science from Lesley University. During my studies there, I was able to student teach in Cambridge Public Schools and Boston Public Schools. I also earned my license in Elementary Education and an endorsement in Sheltered English Immersion. I went on to teach in Fall River Public Schools for 3 years. While teaching, I completed my Master of Arts in Teaching from UMASS Dartmouth.

What made you want to start your business?

While teaching, I learned that I truly thrived when working in small groups of students and 1-on-1 with learners. During my coursework, I focused on upper elementary and middle school math and science. I created a learning strategy and had my class of 5th graders and some sophomores at the high school self-assess their math skills. At the end of the study, 100% of student participants saw an increase in their math scores! Having reflected that I enjoy small groups and 1-on-1 interactions the most, I started tutoring!

I never thought of myself as someone who wanted to own and operate a business. I always envisioned myself in a classroom as a teacher- not necessarily in families’ homes catering to 1-on-1 needs. I feel like I found my own niche and it just made sense to run with it- hence- 2Plus2 Tutoring was created!

What do you love the most about working in Massachusetts?

There is a lot that goes into answering this question- I’ll start with the empowerment that I feel each day as my own boss. It has been a huge adjustment going from working with large teams of professionals to working alone while continuing to prioritize the needs of the student. However, I love the feeling of doing what is best for myself, which in turn, creates an environment where I can do what is best for my families, students, and clients.

What are your favorite small businesses to support in Massachusetts?

Sheepdog Athletics- they have been keeping my body physically and mentally healthy with weight training and nutrition.

Luka B Signs- they are lifelong family friends who have created some awesome gear for my business.

Golden Hour Farm- who doesn’t love a family business? Aside from enjoying visiting the field, you can find me in the tent wrapping flowers and selling flowers!

Who’s A Good Egg- Kara takes care of my two dogs, Mookie and Lego, like they are her own.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?

I have learned to listen to what many have to say, but always make decisions for yourself. So many people have ideas and opinions, but in the end it is YOU that can make the best decision for yourself personally and for your business operations.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?

My current position holds a lot of potential. My goals in the next few years include educational consulting, a brick-and-mortar location, and hiring more tutors. I want to continue to do what I love while growing my business.

When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?

I like to workout, go on long hikes with our two Australian Shepherds, Mookie and Lego, and read mystery novels. I also love boating, traveling and visiting my family in Texas, Florida, New Hampshire, the Cape, and Portugal.

  • I hope that you will continue to grow your business. It seems as if you have found your niche. You have the same love of teaching that your mother had. She is so proud of you and so am I.
