What could be better than carb loading before the Boston Marathon with traditional Italian cuisine?

Although I’m not running Boston this year, I am running the Nashville Marathon, which just so happens to fall during the same week. Despite having been a runner for about 10 years now, this will be my first marathon. I have the actual running part down pat, but having the proper fuel and carbs prior to long runs has been a fun challenge as I test the right meals that give me the ultimate amount of energy. If you’re running Boston and are trying to find the best place to increase your carb intake, I have just the place in mind for you…

Enter: Pasta Beach Rowes Wharf!

Located less than two miles from the finish line, Pasta Beach is the perfect spot to load up on carbs on Sunday, prior to the big race day. Alternatively, if you’re looking for somewhere to go post-race to relax, refuel, and get away from the crowds, this is the place to be.

Two Saturdays ago, my husband Jeremy and I made the trek into Boston during a typical April afternoon of pouring rain. Despite the dreary weather, Pasta Beach provided a cozy, warm environment with the ultimate comfort food — delightful wine and incredible traditional Italian cuisine — that made us forget about the conditions outside. That Saturday happened to be my last 20-mile run prior to my marathon in Nashville, so I was thrilled to reload on carbs after that!

Pasta Beach Meals

We started with the calamari as an appetizer, which happened to also come with shrimp — a bonus. Jeremy and I are huge calamari fans, so chances are if we go somewhere for dinner that has calamari as an appetizer, we’re ordering it.

For our meals, I couldn’t help but select the Margherita “Moderna” pizza. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love pizza (I ordered pizza nearly every day during our honeymoon in Italy this past October!), so choosing it for my meal at Pasta Beach was a no-brainer. Although I’ve had more margherita pizzas than I can count, this was the first time that I had a margherita pizza that was made with burrata instead of mozzarella — and it was such a nice change. I’m glad I chose it!

Jeremy went with the Carbonara “Classic Recipe,” which was a creamy, indulgent dish. He mentioned several times how much he enjoyed it and totally managed to clear his plate — a sign of a great meal.

After burning all of those calories during my long run earlier that morning, I absolutely had room for dessert! We chose one that was similar to a cannoli. Just like pizza was my vice while we were in Italy, cannolis were Jeremy’s vice — so he may or may not have influenced the dessert that we ordered at Pasta Beach. It was delicious and the perfect way to wrap up an amazing meal.

As we live about an hour outside of Boston, we don’t get to go into the city much, but we always enjoy it when we do. We had a great experience at Pasta Beach, and as a (soon-to-be) marathoner myself, I highly recommend it for any marathoners to check out this weekend before they race Boston on Monday!
