Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do at your Chamber of Commerce?
I am Diana Szynal, President of the Springfield Regional Chamber. It is my honor to lead this organization that supports 400 businesses and organizations throughout Springfield and the surrounding region. The SRC focuses on fostering a strong and collaborative economic climate through our networking events, member communications and strong legislative advocacy.
What made you want to work for the Chamber of Commerce?
My previous work as the District Director for State Representative Peter V. Kocot gave me a keen appreciation for the many facets of our local economic fabric. After Representative Kocot’s passing, moving into a position where I could support the businesses and organizations that contribute to our economic vitality seemed like the next logical step. Initially I worked as the Executive Director of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and then had the irresistible opportunity to continue my work in Springfield. It has been a great move that allows me to further deepen my understanding of the Western Massachusetts economy.
What do you love the most about the area where you live in Massachusetts?
Western Massachusetts has it all. Springfield is the economic engine of our region that boasts a strong downtown, a thriving cultural community and amazing attractions like MGM-Springfield, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Thunderbirds hockey, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and so many great restaurants and breweries. But in a short drive, you can enjoy scenic beauty, open farm fields and lots of opportunities for top notch outdoor recreation. Great hospitals, excellent colleges and universities, vibrant performing arts venues, exceptional employment opportunities, beautiful historic homes and no traffic! Add all of that to our proximity to Boston and New York City and Western Massachusetts is tough to beat.
Why do you think it’s important for everyone to be a member of a Chamber of Commerce?
Businesses and organizations that belong to Chambers open themselves up for much greater opportunity for growth and collaboration. I have so many stories about connections that have been made through our Chamber, and often between unexpected parties, that have been very impactful. Belonging to a Chamber also sends the message that your business or organization is serious about being a part of the community.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
I have learned that building and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of people is so important. Plus it feeds the soul!
If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?
Is there a job that lets you play with puppies all day? If so, sign me up.
When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy cooking. I love to plan a meal, shop for the best ingredients, take my time preparing something delicious and then present it beautifully.
