Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do at your Chamber of Commerce?

Hi! I’m Marianne Cohen, and I run the show (and sometimes the group chat) as the Executive Director of the Malden Chamber of Commerce. Think of me as part matchmaker, part event planner, and full-time community cheerleader.

With over 10 years in the business of building connections, I spend my days connecting local businesses, creating opportunities for people to meet, collaborate, and grow, and making sure our members feel supported, seen, and celebrated. Whether it’s helping a new business find its footing or brainstorming creative ways to spotlight our members, I’m all about turning good ideas into great connections.

Basically, if it’s about building community in Malden — I’m probably already on it, with a smile and a lot of enthusiasm.

What made you want to work for the Chamber of Commerce?

Working for a Chamber of Commerce is the perfect mix of everything I love. I’ve always been passionate about event planning, connecting people, and building relationships. I love meeting new people and learning their stories, and the Chamber gives me the chance to do that every day.

What really drew me in, though, was seeing how communities can thrive when local businesses are supported and connected. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being the “glue” that helps make that happen — bringing people together, creating opportunities, and watching both businesses and the community grow stronger because of it.

I also love collaborating with others who share that same mission — including other local Chambers and community organizations. When we work together, the impact is even greater, and the connections run even deeper.

What do you love the most about the area where you live in Massachusetts?

One of the things I love most about living here is how easy it is to enjoy the best of everything — the ocean, the mountains, and all that city life in Boston has to offer, all within reach. New England is such a unique blend of charming small towns and vibrant city life. I’ve traveled to many parts of the country, but nothing compares to the beauty of the four seasons here and the richness they bring to life in this region.

Why do you think it’s important for everyone to be a member of a Chamber of Commerce?

I believe everyone should join the Chamber of Commerce because it’s one of the most effective ways to grow your business and your community. It’s not just about networking — it’s about building real relationships, staying visible, and being part of something bigger than yourself.

The Chamber opens doors: to connections, collaborations, and resources you might not even know you need yet. Whether you’re a solopreneur, running a home-based business, managing a growing team, or part of a large, multi-employee company, the Chamber gives you a seat at the table and a team behind you.

Simply put, when local businesses support each other, everyone wins — and the Chamber is where that support starts.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to always reach for the moon — because sometimes, you just might catch the stars too. Don’t be afraid to take risks, ask boldly, and believe in your ability to accomplish what you know you’re capable of. And along the way, always be kind and courteous — good manners and genuine respect go a long way, no matter where you’re headed.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?

My dream job would be planning events in a beautifully restored barn near Lake Winnipesaukee — mixing creativity, community, and those perfect mountain-lake vibes. I’d love to design every little detail, especially the centerpieces! That, or anything to do with travel — exploring new places, meeting new people, and soaking up different cultures. Either way, it’s all about creating experiences people will never forget.

When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?

In my free time, you’ll often find me at my happy place — Lake Winnipesaukee. There’s nothing better than sitting on the dock with friends and family, listening to the water gently lap the shore, and taking in the mountain views. It’s where I truly recharge. I also enjoy spending time with my husband tackling home renovation projects, always with our loyal Labrador Retriever, Neo, close by. Quality time with friends and family is something I deeply value. And to stay active, I love a good mix of cardio, walking, yoga, and a little friendly competition on the pickleball court!
