Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do at your Chamber of Commerce?
My name is Michelle Mercier, and I serve as the CEO/President of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce. In this role, I have the privilege of leading an organization dedicated to supporting businesses, strengthening regional partnerships, and helping our communities thrive together.
The Chamber serves businesses of all sizes across the Marlborough region, and my work focuses on creating meaningful connections through networking events, advocacy efforts, educational programming, workforce initiatives, and community collaborations. Whether we’re helping a small business gain visibility, bringing together large employers to tackle regional challenges, or creating opportunities for students and young professionals, our mission is centered around building a strong and connected economic ecosystem.
What I love most about this work is the people. Every day, I get to collaborate with passionate business leaders, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, educators, and community partners who genuinely care about the future of this region. It’s incredibly rewarding to help create opportunities that allow businesses — and the people behind them — to grow and succeed together.
What made you want to work for the Chamber of Commerce?
What drew me to the Chamber was the opportunity to bring together every part of my professional journey into one meaningful role. Throughout my career, I’ve worked within large corporations, supported small businesses, collaborated with nonprofits, and built ventures as an entrepreneur myself. Each experience gave me a different perspective on what organizations need in order to grow, adapt, and succeed.
The Chamber sits at the intersection of all of those worlds. It allows me to connect people, ideas, and resources in a way that creates real impact for the broader community. I love being able to help a startup make its first meaningful connections, support established companies as they navigate challenges, and bring nonprofits, educators, and business leaders together around shared goals.
For me, this role is about more than networking or events — it’s about building an ecosystem where businesses and communities can rise together. That’s what makes this work so fulfilling and why it feels like such a natural fit for both my background and my passion.
What do you love the most about the area where you live in Massachusetts?
What I love most about living in this region of Massachusetts is that it truly sits at the center of opportunity. The Marlborough region — including communities like Marlborough, Hudson, Northborough, Southborough, Berlin, and Sudbury — offers the perfect blend of innovation, community, and quality of life. We’re surrounded by incredible businesses ranging from startups to global companies, while also having access to outstanding educational opportunities for both my children and lifelong learners like myself.
What makes the area especially unique is the strong sense of collaboration. There’s an energy here — people genuinely want to support one another, invest in the community, and help the region continue to grow and thrive together.
Why do you think it’s important for everyone to be a member of a Chamber of Commerce?
I believe Chamber membership is valuable because no business or professional succeeds in isolation. A Chamber of Commerce creates the connections, collaborations, and support systems that help individuals and organizations grow stronger together. Whether you’re a small business owner, part of a large corporation, a nonprofit leader, or an emerging professional, being involved in a Chamber gives you access to relationships, resources, advocacy, and opportunities that are difficult to build alone.
More importantly, Chambers help create stronger communities. When businesses are connected and engaged, it drives innovation, economic growth, workforce development, and a greater sense of regional pride. At the end of the day, a thriving business community benefits everyone.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is that meaningful progress is a marathon, not a sprint. Early on, it’s easy to believe success comes from constantly pushing harder and moving faster, but sustainable growth — both personally and professionally — requires pacing yourself, staying focused on the bigger picture, and recognizing that long-term impact is built over time.
I’ve also learned the importance of maintaining open and honest dialogue with the people around you. Strong relationships, collaboration, and communication are at the heart of every successful team, organization, and community.
Finally, resilience has been one of the most valuable qualities I’ve developed. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but the ability to adapt, stay grounded, and continue moving forward is often what defines long-term success.
If you weren’t in your current position, what would your next dream job be?
If I weren’t in my current role, my dream job would likely be continuing as an entrepreneur while still dedicating meaningful time to volunteering and serving on boards. I’m passionate about helping organizations grow, bringing people together, and contributing to causes that create a lasting impact in the community.
When you’re not working, what activities do you enjoy?
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband — who truly is my best friend — and with our children. Family time is incredibly important to me. I also love reading, listening to podcasts focused on personal and professional growth, relaxing at the beach, and traveling whenever I have the opportunity. Those experiences help me recharge, gain new perspectives, and stay inspired.
